Modernizing Legacy Infrastructure

Modernization for Enterprise Insurance Sector

Tags: Custom Software Development, Modernization, Upgrades, Legacy System Upgrades, Migrations

The client, a leading German insurance services provider, was facing a major challenge: several of their critical services were running on outdated systems, exposing them to security vulnerabilities and maintainability risks. To ensure long-term reliability and operational resilience, they sought a complete modernization of their digital platform. Following thorough code-base and infrastructure audits these issues surfaced and needed immediate fix.

For this reason, we partnered with atra.consulting to lead the end-to-end modernization and migration of these services and systems.

Commercial context
  • Such a large financial institution, in the insurance industry needs a clear road-map and a strategic handling of the entire modernization project. Our approach focused on incremental, low-risk upgrades, breaking the modernization process into manageable steps to ensure continuous functionality while addressing critical security issues. Throughout the project, we analyzed legacy systems, resolved compatibility challenges, and optimized service architecture to align with current best practices in software maintainability, security, and performance.

  • Commercial Approach

The commercial approach we followed in partnership with atra.consulting, pioneers our strategic approach to solve precise and complex problems via our new proposed concept: TaaS (Team-as-a-Service). By democratizing the distributed know-how within a small group of professional engineers, they integrated fully within the clients' team, to work on the issues, step by step.

  • Delivery

The team managed the full lifecycle of the modernization effort — from assessment and planning to execution and delivery. This included upgrading internal Java libraries, refactoring core services, and leveraging AI to accelerate the process and mitigate risks. The result is a fully modernized, secure, and maintainable service ecosystem that is easier to operate, extend and maintain.

So far, several services and core internal libraries have been fully migrated and updated, with no remaining vulnerabilities detected, while the remaining components continue to be modernized efficiently. This project demonstrates our capability to modernize complex, enterprise-grade legacy systems while ensuring operational continuity and long-term scalability.
